    Description

French Polynesia (Oceania) and New Caledonia. French Colony aluminum 18-Piece Presentation Essai Set 1948, Lec-328c/d (as a set). 9 coins with border / 9 without border. An extremely rare set that may be unique in presentation according to Lecompte, with each coin having an individual listed mintage of just 10 pieces. Comprised of the 50 centime, franc and 2 franc denominations, and contained in its original dual-layered box of issue, this set contains the following:

    New Caledonia: with rim 50 centimes (2), franc (2), 2 francs (1); without rim 50 centimes (2), franc (1), 2 francs (2)
    French Polynesia: with rim 50 centimes (1), franc (1), 2 francs (2); without rim 50 centimes (1), franc (2), 2 francs (1)

In addition to being a complete set of "with" and "without" rims varieties, duplicates were also placed in this presentation to allow for viewing the completed designs of the set at a single glance, the obverses of each denomination showing face up in the set with the addition of a duplicate coin showing the common reverse. While some of the coins display very light patination, all the coins remain attractive and brilliant overall.

Given the rarity (likely unique in form) of the set and of singles from it, an incredibly difficult item to value. As individual sets, Lecompte values both the French Polynesia and New Caledonia sets at 3500 Euros each in FDC (7000 Euros total), but that only accounts for the 12 coins needed to make a complete set, and not the duplicates encountered within. As such, our estimate is basically a reflection of Lecompte's 12-coin set valuation, discounting the obvious added value of the extra coins and the unique presentation that certainly increases the desirability. That said, given the set's importance for the collection of French Colonial issues, our estimate may very well prove conservative.
