Scintillating Bavarian Pattern 20 Mark

Bavaria. Ludwig III gold Specimen Pattern 20 Mark 1914-D SP67 PCGS, Munich mint, Schaaf-202/G2, cf. J-202. 8.12gm. 1914 was an interesting year for the Bavarian 20 Mark, many patterns were tested but the eventual business strikes were never fully released into circulation, so even the standard issues of this type are rare. Here we have a pristine example of one of the proposed designs for Ludwig III, the King's effigy having been nearly unaltered in comparison to the accepted design, though the spacing and font of the final legend style are quite different. A Superb Gem of unrivaled quality in certified form, the only other competitor being an NGC Proof 65 to which this current offering has that assignment bested by a full two points. A top-notch 20 Mark selection.
