A Classic Gold Rarity of the German Empire
The Finest Certified and Likely the Finest Extant!

Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Friedrich Wilhelm gold 10 Mark 1873-A MS67 NGC, Berlin mint, KM104, Jaeger-235. Mintage: 1,500. One-year type. A top rarity, and next to the legendary Prussian 10 Mark of 1878, the most valuable 10 Mark of the German Empire! While that information alone is enough to draw the attention of the uninformed collector, the present coin's condition, likely the finest known of all survivors, should elevate the allure to even further extremes. Struck from noticeably fresh dies, the fields showcase profound prooflike reflectivity on both sides, with a sheath of cabinet-patina adding a light "frost" to the outer edges. As the grade suggests, both sides are essentially void of marks or handling, with a pinpoint execution of the strike rendering the design in its fully intended splendor. Upon our search of archived sales, we have found but one semi-comparable coin to the present piece, and while both examples are unquestionably extraordinary, we believe the present coin has the slight, but definite, advantage in terms of condition. That aforementioned coin, auctioned without a third-party grade, was sold by the German auction house Heidelberger in 2009 for 47,500 Euros hammer ($57,339 at that time), a price that still stands as a record. Given the intervening time gap between that sale and the present, we have little doubt that this Superb Gem is destined to set yet another price benchmark for the coveted type.
