Description

Prussia. Friedrich Wilhelm III white-metal Pattern 2 Taler 1819-A MS62 NGC, Berlin mint, KM-Unl., J-Unl., Thun-Unl., Marienburg-Unl., cf. Olding-179P1 (this Pattern mentioned), cf. AKS-9 (same). A highly intriguing off-metal strike or Pattern, most notably as no 2 Talers were minted under Friedrich Wilhelm III until 1839, and featured a distinctively older bust with longer hair. Interestingly, though appearing to be a concept for a coin that never was, with crisp, finely cut features, notable die rust is visible over both sides, as well as a small die crack around the H in THALER. According to our research, this piece may very well be unique, with both the Wilmersdörffer Collection and the Marienburg not containing a specimen, and only very few references outside of Olding's Die Münzen des Königreiches Preussen, and Arnold, Küthmann, and Steinhilber's work, Grosser Deutscher Münzkatalog, citing an example struck in 1819 in tin (possibly this very coin).
