A Very Rare 24-Piece Vicariate Set

Saxony. Friedrich August II Vicariate Set 1745. This lot consists of two (2) silver vicariate medals (C. Merseberger 1706) and 22 vicariate ducats struck in silver (C. Merseberger 1708), all contained in the original embossed leather case. Following the death of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VII on January 20th, 1745, the imperial throne remained vacant until the coronation of Franz I on October 4th, 1745. During this period, as was customary, the elector of Saxony struck vicariate issues under his authority as the vicar of imperial power in the period leading to the election and coronation of the new emperor. This very unusual set features 24 pieces of the same design: Friedrich August II rearing on horseback with titles expressing his authority as Imperial Vicar and on the reverse the imperial eagle flying with legends affirming the dignity and protection of the imperial office. The medals were cleaned in the past and bear a number of contact marks and rim dents while retaining XF details. The silver ducats are generally XF-AU, some cleaned or with minor flan flaws. Careful inspection of this set is recommended. This is the first set of this kind we have seen and a most exceptional display of the history of vicariate issues.
