Description

Landau. Free City Siege Klippe 2 Florin 8 Kreuzer 1713 AU55 NGC, KM13, Dav-2377. 21.46gm. 44x50mm. A siege coinage bearing an admirable state of preservation for the type. Brushing the flan is a mottled ash-hue toning accentuating the visual appeal of this three-hundred year old relic.

Minted during the siege by French troops under the leadership of Marshal Bezons in the War of the Spanish Succession, made on behalf of Prince Karl Alexander, later Duke of Württemberg, from his silverware. During the fourth siege of Landau, Prince Karl Alexander, later Duke of Württemberg, was fortress commander. To counter the lack of money that arose during the siege, the Prince had his gold and silver tableware melted down and used to make emergency coins.
