Description

Nürnberg. City gold 20 Goldmark 1928-Dated MS66 Prooflike NGC, Schlumb-W80, Fischer-20.5. 20.5mm. 7.12gm. Josef Wild. Edge: Plain. Nürnberg. City view with radiant sun at right on the horizon // 20/ GOLDMARK/ 7.14 GRAMM/ KURSFAHIGES GOLD/ 1000 / FEIN. A rare issue, with only two others listed on the NGC Census, this piece was minted just before Wild's arrest for forgery in 1929.

Josef Wild, local master goldsmith, was spurred to action in wake of the Great War; unhappy with the hyperinflation of the Mark and the fiat money of Rentenmarks, Wild desired a currency of stable value-gold. Wild took inspiration from growing up with the gold Mark of the German Empire, minting his own 'inflation-proof' coinage. Issued from approximately 1923 to 1928, Wild's Goldmark was 0.357gm of fine gold, marked with the fineness stamp 1000 and stamp of origin.

Metal: Gold
