Saxony. Johann Georg I gold Ducat 1619 MS64 NGC, KM121, Fr-2675. An amazingly preserved example of this early ducat showing the Elector on horseback. This is a relatively scarce type; we have been able to find just twelve other examples that have sold publicly in the last 15 years, with this piece clearly being the best of them. The most recent example to have sold, by the German auction house Heidrun Höhn in October, 2014, also holds the world record for the type- that piece, graded "Fast Vorzüglich/Vorzüglich" (about the equivalent of an AU on the Sheldon scale) realized a hammer price of 2,450 euros ($3,103 at the time). While nice, that piece doesn't come close to the current specimen, which has brilliant luster and superb details on the main devices on the obverse. A truly stunning piece and possibly the finest known.
