Description

Teutonic Order. Maximillian I of Austria Taler 1603 AU58 PCGS, Hall mint, KM3, Dav-5848. Master standing on ground, arms at left, helmet at right / Emperor on horseback in circle of shields, date below. Both the obverse and reverse display an array of ornate detail lavishly and carefully struck, creating successful compositions that visually captivate the observer.

Archduke Maximilian (1558-1618), was appointed coadjutor and grand master of the Teutonic Order in 1585 and in 1590 Grand Master. He became governor of Tyrol in 1602. In 1603 he received the right from Emperor Rudolf II to have his image minted on every 15th Zain in Hall. After Rudolf II's death, Archduke Karl became grand master of the Teutonic Order. Maximilian ruled in Tyrol until his death on 2nd November 1618.
