    Description

    1836 Judd-60 Original Gobrecht Dollar
Die Alignment IV, Deeply Toned PR55

1836 $1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Medal Alignment PR55 PCGS. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment IV (head of Liberty opposite OF). Distinguished as an original striking by the absence of die cracks on the reverse. Restrikes always show minute die cracking on the peripheral lettering. Both coin alignment and medallic alignment pieces are included under the same Judd number, even though it is thought the coin alignment dollars were struck in 1836 and the medallic alignment pieces were struck in March 1837. This is a well-preserved example that shows only the slightest loss of detail on the high points. Both sides are deeply toned in shades of blue, gray, and sea-green with the usual moderate reflectivity in the fields that enhances the vibrancy of the toning. Numerous small handling marks are seen over each side, the only ones worthy of individual note are a thin scratch in the lower right obverse field and a short nick in the reverse field below TE in STATES. (NGC ID# BLWV, PCGS# 11226)
