Description
1836 Gobrecht Dollar, PR62
Judd-60 Original, Die Alignment IV
1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR62
PCGS. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment IV (center of Liberty's
head opposite the right side of F in OF). Die State F. This die
state shows faint evidence of a die scratch through the O in ONE,
another faint die scratch below the D in DOLLAR, and a rim nick
above the A in STATES, a die chip in the dentils above and slightly
right of the R in DOLLAR, and various other earlier die state
attributes. This dollar was certified a number of years ago, before
the diagnostics were clearly understood for Originals and
Restrikes. As stated on the DTS website for Die Alignment IV
dollars: "Originals were struck in alignments I, II, and IV. If you
have an alignment IV, it is an Original regardless of what the
holder says." Each side is virtually mark-free. The fields retain
considerable flash still from the proof mirroring, evident even
through the light, even gray patina. Population: 41 in 62 (2 in
62+), 38 finer (12/22). Ranked #69 on the List of 100 Greatest
US Coins.Ex: San Francisco Signature (Heritage, 3/2014), lot 10464, where it sold for $22,325, where it was cataloged as an Original even though it was incorrectly labeled as a Restrike.
