Description

1836 Die Alignment I Gobrecht Dollar
    Judd-60 Original, Bright XF40 Example

1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, XF40 NGC. Silver. Plain Edge. No Stars Obverse, Stars Reverse. Die Alignment I (coin turn, center of Liberty's head opposite DO in DOLLAR). There is no trace of the diagonal die clash line above the eagle's wing, placing this in the first striking period, and one of an estimated 400 pieces struck in this first run of Gobrecht dollars. One can't help but wonder what this coin looked like when it was new, because it is still remarkably attractive for a coin with 20 points of wear. The fields exhibit strong mirrors still, even though each side is peppered with numerous small contact marks. Slight high-point friction can be seen over Liberty and the center of the eagle's breast. The interiors are gray-brilliant with golden-rose and blue scattered around the margins.
