    1836 Gobrecht Dollar, PR61
    Judd-60 Restrike, Die Alignment III
    Richly Toned and Deeply Reflective

1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Restrike, Pollock-65, R.5, PR61 PCGS. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment III (head of Liberty opposite the N in ONE after a coin turn). Die Alignment III coins are always seen with reverse die cracks. On this piece they are quite obvious through the tops of NITED STATES O, but less evident at the bottom of OLLA. All Die Alignment III coins are restrikes. Coins such as this one, with no die rust to the left of the face of Liberty, are believed to have been struck in the late 1850s.

This late 1850s striking period is consistent with the appearance of this coin. The fields are deeply mirrored, even through the toning, much more so than the fields on the 1836 Originals. For a PR61 this coin still has a lot of pop. Yes, the fields show hairlines, but the rich blue and gray toning does a good job of concealing many of them, at least at arm's length. The strike details are strong overall with complete head and foot definition on Liberty, but just a bit of softness on the breast of the eagle.

HA is a traditional auction house, they set up their auctions slightly different from typical domain auctions. This works well, it seems to be a good mix of old age (live bidding in a prestigious hotel) and new age (online bidding).
