1836 Gobrecht Dollar, Brightly Mirrored PR64
Judd-60, Die Alignment IV, An Early Restrike
1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Restrike, Pollock-65, R.5, PR64
PCGS. CAC. Silver. Plain Edge. No Stars Obverse, Stars Reverse.
Die Alignment IV (head of Liberty opposite OF after a medal turn).
The straight, diagonal die clash mark above the eagle's wing is
especially prominent on this dollar. The rule-of-thumb for Restrike
1836 dollars is there are two distinct versions of the reverse die.
The earliest state shows no die cracking (as seen here). The second
state was reworked and in its earliest version shows die cracking
through the letters. As confirmation of this being the earliest
first version, the dentil chip on the final A in AMERICA is clear,
as is the tiny dentil chip to the right of the same letter. These
markers, and the lack of die cracking, places the striking period
for this piece just after the reverse die clashed with the obverse,
making the diagonal mark especially prominent. This piece was
obviously one of the first struck after the Original striking
period, now believed to be in the final week of December of
1836.It would be logical to assume that prior to producing the Restrike coins the dies would have been polished. And this coin shows abundant evidence of that. The fields are exceptionally bright for a Gobrecht dollar from this early era. The strike definition is also notably strong with no areas of softness on either side, including the foot and sandal of Liberty as well as the high point of the eagle's breast feathers. Each side is covered with light blue toning, light enough that the mirrored flash from the fields shines brightly through the color -- not a given on many Gobrecht dollars. Exceptional quality, this is a Gobrecht dollar worthy of inclusion in a high-grade 19th century type set.
