Description

Exceedingly Rare 1836 Gobrecht Dollar Restrike, Name Below Base

1836 PS$1 Name Below Base, Judd-58 Restrike, Pollock-61, Estimated R.6, PR 64 NGC. Die Alignment III. Today, numismatic scholars believe that no more than twelve Gobrecht dollars with C. GOBRECHT F. below their bases exist. While the majority, if not all, of these pieces are restrikes, the seeming absence of any extant originals adds even more weight to their rarity and desirability. The present specimen is clearly among the finest preserved representations of this fabled design. Although both the obverse and reverse fields betray a few scattered hairlines that preclude a full gem designation, the thick, rich blanket of charcoal-gray patina that envelops both sides successfully masks these impairments from general view. Gorgeous electric-blue and gold undertones are evident throughout. The unbels this piece razor sharp definition. A later impression (1874-1876?), the reverse of this example displays well-advanced die cracks through OLLA and NITED STATES O, as well as a sizeable crack through the denticles above OF AME. For pedigree purposes, we call attention to a noticeable planchet flaw in the reverse field below ON of ONE and a more inconspicuous one below the second L of DOLLAR. Of undisputed importance among silver dollar enthusiasts, this coin's awe-inspiring eye appeal leaves little doubt as to the unrivaled beauty of Christian Gobrecht's original Seated Liberty conception.
