Description

1838 Gobrecht Dollar, PR63+
Judd-84 Restrike, Early Die State
Rare in Die Alignment IV
Only One Other Piece is Available to Collectors

1838 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-84 Restrike, Pollock-93, R.5, PR63+ PCGS. Ex: Simpson. Silver. Die Alignment IV (center of Liberty's head opposite the F in OF). This is an early Restrike, most readily seen by the X-shaped die scratches in the right obverse field that extend from the forearm to thigh. Other diagnostics are present, but more difficult to discern. These early state restrikes were produced circa June 1859 to 1863. They were struck by Mint Director James Ross Snowden as "trade bait" for collectors to fill in the Mint's collection of Washingtonia. Snowden's ploy was successful, and it led to more demand for Gobrecht dollars, which resulted in the later Middle and Late State Restrikes. Because of the later era in which these Restrikes were produced the fields are deeply reflective on this piece, fully consistent with other proofs from 1859 to 1863, unlike the so-called proof finish seen on 1836 Die Alignment I dollars (which were struck in 1836). Judd-84 in Die Alignment IV is a notable rarity among Gobrecht dollars. Only four pieces are known today: one in the Mint Cabinet, the Korein coin in the ANS, the Norweb piece, and this one. Meaning -- this is one of only two pieces available to collectors. Each side shows swirling rose and cobalt-blue toning, and the strike is complete in all areas. Ranked #69 on the List of 100 Greatest US Coins.
