    1839 Gobrecht Dollar
    Judd-104 Original, Die Alignment IV

1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Original, Pollock-116, R.3, PCGS Genuine. Proof Details. Silver. Reeded Edge. Die Alignment IV (medal turn, the head of Liberty is opposite the F in OF). Die State B. The PCGS number ending in .98 suggests Damage as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of an AU specimen that has been damaged and shows questionable color. The nature of the damage is not specific, but a scratch is noted in the left obverse field and a small cluster of shallow digs are located in the reverse field to the right of the eagle's wing. The die state is challenging on this example, due in large part to the depth of the toning present. The central devices are strongly struck, but there is some weakness observed on the peripheral obverse stars. Each side is covered in deep blue-gray and sea-green toning, but the proof reflectivity is still strongly evident in the fields. Slight evidence of friction can also be seen.
