Toned Restrike 1839 Gobrecht Dollar, PR61
1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR61
PCGS. Silver. Reeded Edge. Die Alignment IV (center of
Liberty's head opposite the right side of the F in OF). For years
Gobrecht specialists have been searching for an 1839 in Die
Alignment I (head of Liberty opposite the DO in DOLLAR). That
search has proved fruitless to date. However, it is possible that
some might have been struck in 1839. These pieces would be lightly
cracked, perhaps we should say very lightly cracked as
opposed to lightly cracked, as all 1839s have light cracks. It does
appear, however, that the majority of 1839 dollars were struck in
the late 1850s.
Judd-104, Die Alignment IV
Similar to the coin in our May Long Beach Sale, this piece shows faint die cracking that connects the tops of MERI, but we see no evidence of a crack between TE and no trace of a die crack at the bottom of LAR. This is indicative of a coin that was one of the first restrikes produced in the late 1850s. This piece is lightly hairlined and each side is toned in the centers in shades of golden-rose that deepens to blue around the reverse margin. The devices are fully struck and there are no obvious contact marks on either side. (NGC ID# BLY5, PCGS# 11446)
