    1839 Restrike Gobrecht Dollar, Judd-104
    Sharply Contrasted PR63 Cameo

1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR63 Cameo NGC. Stars Obverse, No Stars Reverse. Silver. Reeded Edge. Die Alignment IV (medal turn, center of Liberty's head opposite right side of F in OF). A die crack connects the tops of MERI, a characteristic of later restrikes. Additionally, the texture of the surfaces identifies this piece as a product of the 1860s or 1870s, certainly not 1839. The fields display a high degree of die polish and deep reflectivity, and heavy striations are noted that created this mirroring. The coin has also been lightly cleaned, leaving hairlines that go in another direction from the striations. Each side is mostly brilliant in the center with light dabs of russet patina at the margin. The die striations gives this Gobrecht the strong cameo contrast seen between the fields and devices, an unusual and certainly desirable finish on this popular 19th century type coin.
Although our description calls the 1839 Judd-104 "Name Omitted," it is noteworthy that the authors and contributors to the reference Gobrecht Dollars Illustrated by the Collection of Julius Korein, M.D. choose a different terminology: Name Removed. This casts a whole new light on the 1838- and 1839-dated Gobrecht dollars, particularly those most frequently seen, the Judd-84 and Judd-104 issues.
In a chapter titled "Gobrecht Reflections," John Dannreuther sums up his thinking about the matter nicely:

"The Starry and Starless [reverse] dies were from a common master die, with the dentils and lettering identical on the two dies, as they both have 182 identically placed dentils. (All four Gobrecht obverse dies have 165 identically placed dentils.) The stars were added to the reverse to created the starred reverse used for the 1836 Name on Base issue, just as the stars were added to a new master die that was created from the name-removed starless obverse working hub and used for the 1838 and 1839 obverse dies."
