1839 Gobrecht Dollar, Lightly Toned PR64
Judd-104 Restrike, Rare Die Alignment III

1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR64 PCGS. Silver. Reeded Edge. Die Alignment III (head of Liberty opposite the N in ONE after a coin turn). After many years of controversy, much of the contention about 1839 Gobrecht dollars seems to have died down. The controversy has mostly surrounded the existence or non-existence of Die Alignment I or soaring eagle 1839 dollars. The fact that none have emerged seems to render the point moot. However, none doubt the rarity of the Die Alignment III dollars. These pieces have a coin turn, and the eagle flies level. It is generally thought these dollars were produced during a later striking period, perhaps as late as the 1870s. This particular piece shows the expected die cracks but they are very light, indicating an early restriking period. Die cracks on the reverse of all Gobrecht dollars is light, some might justifiably say microscopic, but on this piece the only apparent crack is through the bottom of the letters LLAR, and another connecting crack between D and O.

No mintage figures exist for the restrike 1839 dollars. Estimates range widely. The groundbreaking Revisionists, James Gray and Mike Carboneau, estimated a mintage of approximately 100 Type III 1839 dollars. Saul Teichman approaches the matter somewhat differently without estimating the mintage, but he estimates that only 18 to 20 pieces exist today in this alignment. Type III dollars are almost always found in high grades, another indication of a later striking period.

This is such a high-grade piece. The fields show remarkable depth of reflectivity, mirroring that is not found on coins struck in the 1830s. Strike details are also complete on each side, including Liberty's hair, obverse stars, Liberty's foot and sandal, and all the eagle's plumage. Each side displays light gray-golden toning with just a hint of powder-blue around the margins. There are no obvious or detracting contact marks on either side of this exceptional Gobrecht dollar.
