Description
1839 Gobrecht Dollar, PR65
Judd-104 Restrike, Name Omitted
Condition Census
1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR65
NGC. Silver. Reeded Edge. Die Alignment IV (medal turn, the
head Liberty is opposite the F in OF). Late State Restrike.
Restrike 1839 dollars made in Die Alignment IV show microscopic
reverse die cracks through MERI and other reverse letters. The Late
State Restrikes are also prevalent for their deeply reflective
fields and extravagant die polish lines throughout the fields on
both sides. On the reverse, an area of rough die lines appears in
the notch of the field connecting the eagle's wing and
tailfeathers. These diagnostics of the Late State Restrikes are all
apparent on the present coin.According to the DTS website, all Late State Restrikes seen are in Die Alignment IV, and were likely struck circa 1873 to 1874, during Linderman's second run as Superintendent. These are, most notably, the last Gobrecht dollars struck.
This piece is among the top Condition Census examples. The details are crisp throughout with strong definition on all the design elements. The fields are deeply mirrored and each side is covered with smoky gray and deep blue toning. There are essentially no contact marks that would be easy to use for pedigree identifiers as any flaws on this Gem are so minute that they might not appear in other previous catalogs.
