Rarely Seen 1839 Gobrecht Dollar in Die Alignment III, PR63 NGC

1839 PS$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.7, PR63 NGC. Richmond Collection. Silver. Die Alignment III (coin turn, eagle flying level). The majority of 1839 restrike dollars are found in Die Alignment IV, but a small number are known as this coin in Die Alignment III. These pieces have reverse die cracks similar to the Type II coins with a faint crack seen at the tops of MERI in AMERICA on the reverse. These coins were probably struck in the late 1860s (or perhaps slightly later); a time period when the Die Alignment III Judd-60s were being made. In any case, the Die Alignment III dollars are very scarce and are estimated to have a total mintage of approximately 100 pieces. Based on observational data collected over ten years of research by Mike Carboneau and James Gray, it is currently estimated that about 23% of all 1839 dollars appear in Die Alignment III, and about 77% are in Die Alignment IV. Also, the 1839 dollars that exist in Die Alignment III are almost always found in high grades (PR61 through PR65), with an average grade exceeding Proof-63. Only one circulated 1839 dollar is known to exist in Die Alignment III. This coin is just slightly below the average for the issue at the PR63 level. Nevertheless, it is a well preserved coin that has deeply reflective fields. Each side is covered with rich layerings of sea-green and rose toning, and there are no obvious contact marks on either side.(#11446) (NGC ID# BLY5, PCGS# 11446)
