High Grade (PR62) 1836 Second Original Gobrecht Dollar
1836 PS$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR62 ANACS. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment IV (medallic turn, center of Liberty's head opposite right side of F in OF). A so-called Second Original, struck in March 1837. All 1836-dated Gobrecht dollars that are struck with a medallic alignment are related, and part of the 1837 issue. As the reverse die slowly rotated during the striking process, an entire series of Gobrecht dollars were produced with die orientations that varied from Die Alignment II (eagle flying upward) to Die Alignment IV (eagle flying level). A few pieces have even been seen with the eagle tilted slightly downward. This piece is unusually well preserved for a Second Original. Of the 400 or so coins believed to have been struck from this die alignment, most are circulated. The surfaces seen here are hairlined, as one would expect, but much of the effect has been muted by a light overlay of rose-golden and lilac toning. The striking details are especially notable with complete hair detail on Liberty and full definition on the toes. The Mint-made die scratch above the eagle's wing is especially prominent on this piece and no magnification is necessary to see it.
