Description

1849-C Gold Dollar, AU53
Closed Wreath

1849-C G$1 Closed Wreath AU53 NGC. Variety 1. A scarce issue with an original mintage of 11,634 pieces, the 1849-C Closed Wreath is the most elusive C-mint gold dollar after only the 1849-C Open Wreath, 1850-C, and 1859-C. Survivors (of which there are approximately 200-300 pieces known) are usually offered in VF or XF grades. This is, however, an unusually high-grade example. There are traces of brightness in the fields on both sides, and the color is a warm, honey-gold shade. Boldly defined throughout with a remarkable lack of most distracting abrasions for the grade. A popular first-year issue, and the only readily collectible variety of the date.
