Description

Outstanding 1849-C Closed Wreath Gold Dollar, AU58

1849-C G$1 Closed Wreath AU58 PCGS. As on all known examples of this variety, the strike has a decidedly concave/convex appearance with the obverse on this coin appearing especially convex. Despite this, the details in the centers are remarkably full and this includes complete radial lines in the stars. The surfaces show some light, well-scattered marks but none of these are deep or detracting. Careful examination with a glass reveals no wear or major friction on the high spots. The luster is bold and essentially complete with a frosty texture and some semi-prooflike reflectiveness seen on the obverse. The color is attractive with original natural yellow-gold that deepens to orange-gold at the borders. The overall appearance of this coin is excellent and it shows the "two-tone" look that is seen on the few remaining original high grade examples. Housed in an older PCGS holder, the coin appears to be conservatively graded by today's standards.
The 1849-C Closed Wreath is the sixth rarest of nine Charlotte gold dollars in higher grades. Probably three to four dozen pieces exist in AU as well as another nine to 12 in Uncirculated grades.
