Sparkling Mint State 1849-C Closed Wreath Gold Dollar

1849-C G$1 Closed Wreath MS63 PCGS. This is the first year of issue for the Liberty Head gold dollar. Design tinkering was evident on the wreath, as both Philadelphia and Charlotte Mint coin dies show the "Closed" or "Open" wreath design. On the Open Wreath coins, the wreath ends below the first T of STATES and below and right of the F in OF, on the Closed Wreath design as seen here, the wreath ends below AT of STATES and on the right extends nearly to the right edge of the second S of STATES. The fields of this coin show prooflike reflectivity in the protected areas, and we note die file marks through the lower right obverse stars to the rim. With the Open Wreath, the 1849-C Liberty gold dollar is one of the great rarities of all United States coins, with just five graded by the two main services. Turning back to the present coin, this Closed Wreath 1849-C is one of the finer examples from the paltry mintage of 11,634 pieces. In fact, the combined NGC and PCGS Population Reports show eight coins graded this higher, with just two pieces seen finer. An important offering for the specialist who demands high grades and rarity.(#7505) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25BC, PCGS# 7505)
