Description
Mint State 1849-C Gold Dollar, Ex: Stanley Elrod
1849-C Closed Wreath MS 61 NGC. Elrod. A rare Type One gold dollar from a mintage of 11,634 pieces, a number that includes those of its excessively rare Open Wreath counterpart. Although overshadowed by the Open Wreath, this issue is, nevertheless, one of the most difficult dates in the series. At the mint state level, the '49-C is a High R.7 coin with an estimated 4-6 pieces believed known in that grade range. This is the second finest example we have handled (the finest being an MS 63). The quality, however, is representative of the coins contained in Stanley Elrod's famed collection of Charlotte gold: solid mint state quality with strong eye appeal for the grade. The fields are bright and semi-prooflike, as often seen on the issue. The surfaces show a few abrasions scattered about which account for the grade (none of which deserve individual mention), and there is a touch of striking softness on the hair curls of Liberty over the ear. The entire coin is covered with rich reddish-coppery patina. Outstanding quality for this rare first year issue.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25BC, PCGS# 7505, Greysheet# 8053)
