    1849-D Gold Dollar, MS63
    Conditionally Rare D-Mint Type Coin

1849-D G$1 MS63 NGC. Variety 1-B. The 1849-D is the debut gold dollar from the Dahlonega Mint and is also the most plentiful overall, ideal for type purposes. Southern gold specialist Doug Winter suggests that the 1849-D was saved as a first-year souvenir of sorts, as the issue's mintage of 21,588 pieces is not unusually high for D-mint gold dollars. Nonetheless, Mint State coins are elusive, and this Select Uncirculated representative is conditionally rare. The strike is impressively sharp, albeit produced by clashed dies. Bright, reflective fields exhibit only trivial contact marks. This level of quality is seldom seen on the 1849-D gold dollar, and finer coins are exceedingly rare. Census: 14 in 63, 9 finer (7/16).
