    1849 Closed Wreath Dollar, MS65
    Seldom Available in Gem

1849 G$1 Closed Wreath MS65 NGC. The difference between the more available 1849 Open Wreath gold dollars and the Closed Wreath counterparts in Gem condition is significant, yet underappreciated by the collecting public. Struck with the Large Head motif, the Closed Wreath variety was struck later in 1849 when the excitement of the first-year gold dollars had waned, and fewer pieces were preserved. This radiant, frosty Gem flashes apricot-gold coloration and vibrant mint luster. Sharply struck throughout, it is the Heavy Date variant (Breen-6005). Census: 15 in 65, 2 finer (11/15).(Registry values: P4)
