1849 Closed Wreath Gold Dollar, MS66
    None Numerically Finer at PCGS

1849 G$1 Closed Wreath MS66 PCGS. A substantial mintage of 688,567 gold dollars was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint in 1849, split between the Open Wreath and Closed Wreath varieties. The Closed Wreath motif is much scarcer than its Open Wreath counterpart today, suggesting it accounted for a smaller portion of the reported mintage. This was the first year of the denomination, so it seems likely contemporary collectors saved the Open Wreath coins, which were struck first, for their novelty value. By the time the Closed Wreath coins were produced, the fascination had worn off and few were preserved.

The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem, with sharply detailed design elements throughout. Both obverse and reverse show interesting clash marks and the lustrous orange-gold surfaces are impeccably preserved. Eye appeal is extraordinary. Population: 5 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (2/17).(Registry values: P4)
