    Popular First-Year Type Coin

    1849 G$1 No L MS65 NGC. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth estimate about 1,000 gold dollars were struck without designer Longacre's initial in 1849, the first year of the denomination. This delightful Gem exhibits sharply detailed design elements throughout and the well-preserved orange-gold surfaces are lustrous and appealing. Census: 25 in 65 (1 in 65+ ), 20 finer (3/21).
