Description

Near-Gem 1849 Open Wreath Gold Dollar

1849 G$1 Open Wreath MS64 PCGS. Small Head, With L. This lovely near-Gem displays strong luster and yellow-gold color, which is joined by accents of orange and lime-green on the obverse. The obverse has a slight semiprooflikeness quality. Excellent definition is noted on the Liberty motif and on the reverse elements, while minor softness is observed on about half of the star centers. A few wispy handling marks in the obverse fields define the grade. The Small Head variety is scarcer than the Large Head counterpart of this issue. PCGS has graded just 60 pieces finer (12/07).
