Description

Choice 1849-O Open Wreath Dollar, MS64

1849-O G$1 MS64 PCGS. The initial reverse design for the gold dollar had an open wreath with the branches terminating at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock. Perhaps this was deemed an unbalanced design, as it was quickly modified with branches terminating at about 11:30 and 12:30. However, the new reverse dies did not reach New Orleans in time for the 1849 coinage, so all known examples have the open design. This example is an amazing near-Gem with highly lustrous and frosty yellow-gold surfaces and sharp design elements. It approaches the finest known of the date, and is highly desirable at the MS64 grade level. Population: 15 in 64, 4 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N2998)
