1849-O Gold Dollar, Rare MS65
Among the Finest O-Mint Coins at PCGS

1849-O G$1 Open Wreath MS65 PCGS. Variety 1. The mintmark is higher on this variety than either of the others, but a more distinctive feature is bold repunching of the ME in AMERICA. This Gem example is sharply struck with bright yellow-gold luster. Portions of the fields are satiny and other areas are semiprooflike, but neither side of this first-year New Orleans gold dollar shows bothersome abrasions.

The gold dollar debuted in 1849 under the same legislation that authorized the double eagle. Difficulty preparing the dies for the double eagle kept that denomination out of production until 1850, but the gold dollar was readily struck by all active mints; in 1849, this included the Philadelphia, New Orleans, Dahlonega, and Charlotte facilities. Most of the coins were struck in Philadelphia, but New Orleans produced a moderately high 215,000-piece mintage. This issue is available in many Uncirculated grades, but Choice coins are scarce and Gems are rare. This Gem is among the finest that PCGS has graded. Population: 9 in 65 (2 in 65+), 0 finer (3/18).(Registry values: N4719)
