Description

Choice and Attractive 1850-C Gold Dollar, AU58

1850-C G$1 AU58 PCGS. Few examples of the 1850-C are as well struck as this example. It shows virtually complete definition on both the obverse and reverse and is especially well detailed on the hair and wreath. The obverse is extremely clean with just a few light ticks in the left field. The reverse has a few old hairlines and a small, oddly-shaped mint-made planchet flaw to the left of the 1 in the denomination. The luster is slightly granular in texture and, as common with this issue, it is somewhat subdued. A bit of semi-prooflike reflectiveness can be seen in the fields on both sides. The color is pleasing with a rich reddish-orange hue seen on the obverse; the reverse is similar but with a slightly lighter hue. This is an attractive example of this scarcer issue and it is rarely encountered with this strength of strike and obvious originality. Housed in an older PCGS holder, the coin appears to be conservatively graded by today's standards.
The 1850-C is tied for the third rarest issue in this series and it is the fifth rarest in higher grades. Around three dozen coins are known in AU and there are another five to seven that may qualify as Uncirculated.
