    1850-C Gold Dollar, MS62+
    Near the Condition Census

1850-C G$1 MS62+ PCGS. Variety 1. Ex: Simpson. The 1850-C gold dollar is elusive in all grades. From a mintage of 6,966 pieces, only 150 to 250 examples are believed extant. In Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, third edition, Doug Winter writes:

"The 1850-C has the second lowest mintage figure of any gold dollar struck at the Charlotte Mint. From the standpoint of overall rarity, it is tied with the 1859-C as the second rarest gold dollar from this mint."

The date is especially scarce in Mint State, and most such pieces grade no finer than MS61. In MS62, the date is rare, and PCGS lists only three finer representatives. The present coin is the only MS62 piece with a Plus designation at either leading certification service. The coin is deeply lustrous and satiny, with lilac and orange-gold hues blanketing the minimally marked fields. The border stars and central devices are sharp, and eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 6 in 62 (1 in 62+), 3 finer (9/20).
