Description

Exceptional MS 64 1851-C Gold Dollar

1851-C MS 64 NGC. While common in circulated condition and even in the lower grades of mint state, a near-gem example such as this is considered rare, although not quite a Condition Census piece. This is quite an exceptional coin, and when viewing it one may find it difficult to believe that the Miller Collection also contains a piece that is two points finer. The strike is uncommonly bold with sharply defined hair curls and star radials. The fields are mostly bright and prooflike with light die striations still in evidence, the prooflikeness alternating with an occasional streak of frost where the die polish is incomplete. The surfaces are very well preserved and the green-gold color is only interrupted by a few small abrasions. The only mark that appears useful as a pedigree identifier is an angling scratch in the upper right reverse field, extending from OF to the first A in AMERICA. We also note die flaking on the 1 in the denomination, but this may not be apparent in photographs from older catalogs.
