Description
Sharp, Attractive 1851-D Gold Dollar, MS61 NGC
1851-D G$1 MS61 NGC. Variety 3-D. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Struck from a very heavily clashed reverse die. The 1851-D is among the most available gold dollars from the Dahlonega mint. There are an estimated 150-175 pieces known, including as many as 12-15 Uncirculated coins. The central details on both sides are almost completely brought up. Every star has completely formed radial lines and the date and mintmark are both very bold. On both sides, the denticles are distinct and virtually complete. For the grade, the surfaces are noticeably reflective, very choice, and clearly suggestive of originality. The subtle green-gold coloration is quite attractive and should appeal to the collector who appreciates coins that have not been unnaturally brightened. This is a well struck 1851-D that has pleasing surfaces, good luster, and nice color. It is certainly at the high end of the Mint State 61 range and it compares favorably with examples we have seen that have been graded a point higher. (#7515) (Registry values: N2998)
