Description

1851-D Gold Dollar, MS61
Winter 3-E

1851-D G$1 MS61 NGC. Winter 3-E. This is the usually encountered variety of 1851-D gold dollars that survives from a mintage of 9,882 coins. The other variety, Winter 3-D, is infrequently seen. A review of our recent auction archives suggests that 85% of all 1851-D gold dollars are from the 3-E die pair. Both dies show minor clash marks. The lustrous light yellow-gold surfaces display trivial handling marks that appear consistent with the lower Mint State grade. Census: 21 in 61, 36 finer (3/25).(Registry values: N2998)
