Condition Census 1851-D Gold Dollar

1851-D G$1 MS62 PCGS. Variety 3-D. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Struck from very heavily clashed obverse and reverse dies; two distinct stars can be seen, incuse, on the reverse to the left of the mintmark.

RARITY INFORMATION: The 1851-D is among the most available gold dollars from the Dahlonega mint. There are an estimated 150-175 pieces known, including as many as 12-15 Uncirculated coins. There are two or three Mint State 64s, a small number of Mint State 63s, and an equally limited number of Mint State 62s.

STRIKE: Despite being struck from strongly clashed dies, the central details on both sides are almost completely brought up. Every star has completely formed radial lines and the date and mintmark are both very bold. On both sides the denticles are complete and distinct.

SURFACES: Both sides are quite clean with no distinctive abrasions noted. There are some very light, shallow hairlines (not from cleaning) seen in the obverse fields. For the grade, the surfaces are very choice and clearly suggestive of originality.

LUSTER: This date is known for good luster, and this piece is certainly no exception. The texture is frosty with a slight amount of graininess, as made. The luster shows no signs of having been disturbed.

COLORATION: The obverse is a light to medium greenish-gold, while the reverse is a slightly deeper green-gold hue. This coloration is quite attractive and should appeal to the collector who appreciates coins that have not been unnaturally brightened.

EYE APPEAL: This is a well struck 1851-D that has pleasing surfaces, good luster, and nice color. It is certainly at the high end of the Mint State 62 range and it compares favorably with examples we have seen that have been graded a point higher.

COMPARABLES: The Bass II: 52 example, graded Mint State 62 by PCGS, was auctioned in October 1999 for $10,350. Another PCGS Mint State 62 brought $7,475 in our 1999 FUN auction.

PEDIGREE: Ex: Long Beach Sale (Heritage, 2/99), lot 6100 ($8,050); Michigan Collection. This is also the plate coin in Winter's revised Dahlonega book and it is listed in the updated Condition Census as tied for fifth finest known with a number of other examples.
