Description

Richly Lustrous 1851-D Gold Dollar, MS62
    Sharply Struck and Boldly Die-Clashed

1851-D G$1 MS62 PCGS. Variety 3-E. An upward-facing leaf just left of the wreath bow points to the center of the last 1 in the date, identifying the 3-E variety. On this richly lustrous yellow-gold piece, a bold die crack runs from the 51 in the date, through the wreath, just left of the I(CA), and thence to the rim. A couple of the obverse stars are boldly clashed on the lower reverse. The obverse shows few obvious signs of clashing. A few scattered marks account for the grade, but the eye appeal is excellent on this boldly struck piece. The mintage of the 1851-D gold dollar was only 9,882 pieces, and this MS62 coin is one of 12 such at PCGS, with nine finer (12/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25BM, PCGS# 7515)
