Description

1851-D Gold Dollar, MS63, Variety 3-D
One of the Better Coins Known

1851-D G$1 MS63 NGC. Variety 3-D. This is a later die state of this scarce die pairing, as seen by the advanced die crack above and below the first S in STATES and the heavy die clashing on the reverse. This already interesting coin has even more collector appeal as the reverse is rotated approximately 90 degrees from its normal alignment. While the 1851-D is one of the more frequently encountered D-mint Type One dollars, it is conditionally challenging with the finest coins listed on Doug Winter's Condition Census MS64. This is a bright, lustrous example that shows rich orange-gold color. There are no obvious or mentionable abrasions and the strike is strong throughout. Census: 4 in 63, 5 finer (2/13).(Registry values: N4719)
