Description

1851-D Gold Dollar, MS63
High-End Dahlonega Type Coin

1851-D G$1 MS63 PCGS. Variety 3-E. Any Dahlonega gold dollar is a rarity in Mint State, but the 1851-D is among a handful of dates in the series that are usually obtainable at this level -- most collectors find other issues to be far out of reach in Mint State. Of the 300 to 400 '51-D gold dollars believed extant, Doug Winter estimates 15 to 20 are Uncirculated. This MS63 example is among the finer-known representatives and is a significant rarity at this level. The surfaces yield satiny lemon-gold luster with peach overtones in the fields. The highest points of Liberty's hair curls and the central reverse lettering are slightly weak, but the peripheral stars are well-defined. Close study reveals crisscrossing die polish lines in the fields, while grade-limiting abrasions are unimpressive. Population: 6 in 63 (2 in 63+), 2 finer (11/15).(Registry values: N4719)
