Description

Select 1851-D Gold Dollar
Rare Issue in Mint State

1851-D G$1 MS63 PCGS. Variety 3-E. The 1851-D gold dollar has a reported mintage of 9,882 pieces, large in the context of the series, but minuscule in absolute terms. Doug Winter estimates a surviving population of 150-175 coins in all grades, with 12-15 examples remaining in Mint State. Currently, PCGS has certified only four coins in MS63, with two finer; while NGC has graded four examples at the Select level, with six finer (6/10).
The present coin is a delightful Select specimen, with vibrant mint luster and pleasing green-gold surfaces. The striking details are sharp for a D-mint issue, but some softness is noted on LA in DOLLAR. Overall visual appeal is outstanding.(Registry values: N4719)
