Description
1852-C Gold Dollar, MS65
Only One Graded Finer
1852-C G$1 MS65 NGC. Winter-2. Ex: Bass. Three famous 20th
century numismatists (King Farouk, Emery May Norweb, and Harry W.
Bass, Jr.) with generous funds at their disposal all selected the
present 1852-C gold dollar for their collections. In its Bass
catalog appearance, the present Gem was described as "possibly the
second finest known example." It is a magnificent Gem with
semiprooflike centers and cartwheel luster at the borders. The
strike is bold for the remote facility, and contact is
inconsequential. A shallow vertical pod-shaped strike-through, as
coined, extends from the right foot of the large 1 to the field
between the LA in DOLLAR. Census: 5 in 65, 1 finer (3/25).Ex: King Farouk Palace Collection (Sotheby's, 2/1954), lot 285; Norweb Collection (Bowers and Merena, 3/1988), lot 1865; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 61.(Registry values: N7079)
