Finest Known 1852-C Gold Dollar--An Extraordinary Coin of Singular Beauty and Originality
1852-C MS 66 NGC. Of the 9,434 pieces produced, and few dozen high grade (AU and mint state) pieces extant, this is unquestionably the finest known. The coin is distinctive and most memorable because of the outrageous color seen over each side. Very few gold coins exhibit such rich and varied coloration. Most likely struck from a planchet that contained a higher copper content than usual, each side has a deep reddish-coppery hue. On the obverse a wide band of translucent blue encircles the rim, while only faint glimmers of blue can be made out on the reverse. The striking details are better defined than usual, but there is still slight softness over the highpoints of the hair curls on the obverse. The fields are prooflike, their brightness illuminating the multiple layers of coloration. Virtually perfect in terms of overall preservation of the surfaces, the only flaws are mint-made, being limited to light die clashing on the obverse, and the often-seen die lamination that runs from the base of the 1 in the denomination on the reverse to the LA in DOLLAR.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25BR, PCGS# 7518, GSID# 8063)
