Description

1853-C Gold Dollar, MS63
Outstanding Original Coloration

1853-C G$1 MS63 NGC. Variety 1. The 1853-C gold dollar comes from a small mintage of 11,515 pieces, of which fewer than 300 are believed to survive in all grades, according to Southern gold specialist Doug Winter. Uncirculated examples are rare, most grading MS60 to MS62. This Select example is high-end for the issue, and only a few finer pieces are reported. The strike is sharp, and the satiny surfaces display original orange-gold coloration and minimal abrasions. Eye appeal surpasses that of many other Uncirculated pieces that we have seen. Winter writes in Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint: "Properly graded MS63 to MS64 examples are extremely rare and I have seen only three or four that I feel qualify as such." Census: 14 in 63, 4 finer (1/18).(Registry values: N4719)
