Description

1853-C Gold Dollar, MS63
Above-Average Detail

1853-C G$1 MS63 NGC. Variety 1. A production of 11,515 gold dollars at the Charlotte branch mint in 1853 required a single set of dies. The coins were released into circulation and few were saved by contemporary collectors, as there was little numismatic interest in this country at the time. In addition, the issue was not well-produced and most examples seen are weakly struck, on low-quality planchets. As a result, the 1853-C is seldom seen in Mint State grades today.

This impressive Select representative is well-struck for the issue, with the usual planchet roughness and faint evidence of clashing. Light yellow-gold surfaces maintain partial original mint luster. Census: 14 in 63, 4 finer (10/19).(Registry values: N4719)
