Description

1853-C Gold Dollar, MS63
One of the Finest Known

1853-C G$1 MS63 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. Nearly all surviving 1853 gold dollars from the Charlotte Mint (original mintage of 11,515 pieces) are in circulated grades as there was little numismatic interest in them at the time of production. Moreover, the 1853-C was a poorly manufactured coin. Douglas Winter (2008) considers it "the worst struck Type One gold dollar from the Charlotte Mint." Many were also struck on defective planchets, showing chips or fissures. And the luster is typically substandard. Consequently, the infrequent example that might be located in Mint State is likely to be only MS60 or MS62. This makes our current Select offering a rare opportunity for the collector of Charlotte gold coinage. The strike is atypically strong, especially for this issue. The only mark of note is a scrape to the left of the 1 in the denomination. The surfaces display pronounced green-gold with deeper accents of red on the reverse. Population: 4 in 63, 0 finer (7/11).
