Description

Mint State 1853-C One Dollar Gold Piece

1853-C MS 62 NGC. Only 10-12 mint state examples are believed known today of the 1853-C from an original mintage of 11,515 pieces. While just outside the Condition Census, this is nevertheless one of the finer specimens available to collectors. As expected, the striking details are weak, but moreso on the obverse than the reverse where the central details are curiously well defined. The bright surfaces have a distinctive green-gold cast with subdued satiny luster. There are three milling marks on the lower cheek of Liberty that serve to identify this coin along with a red alloy spot on the reverse above the TA in STATES.
